The Bletherings of Former Chieftains on absolutely anything and everything

B&W 4
I thought after writing the sad dedication
to the bombing victims in Julys B&W I
would try to lighten up your lives this
month by basically focusing on more light
hearted anecdotes.
THE DYING ART OF EDITING
Elaine Shon, the Chieftain’s wife, has
probably done more work than anyone
putting together the Highland Gathering
magazine and editing all the articles
before going to print. Having done this
job, many, many years ago I can certainly
appreciate the amount of work and
dedication involved in ensuring a first
class publication reaches all the readers.
The most annoying aspect of this task
however is, after spending hours carefully
editing all the articles, having someone
come up to you and tell you he/she found
an error on some page or other. If the
person only knew what they had just done
to your blood pressure level! But I
suppose some people just love to point
out other’s mistakes. One thing is certain,
however: Elaine would have spotted the
double entendre in the following
headlines but just might have let some of
them go for the hell of it and putting a
smile on the readers’ faces.

Still Having a Bad Day????
The average cost of rehabilitating a seal after the Exxon
Valdez Oil spill in Alaska a few years back was $80,000.00.
At a special ceremony, two of the most expensively saved
animals were being released back into the wild amid cheers
and applause from onlookers.
A minute later, in full view, a killer whale ate them both.
Was this called “S(t)ealing?”
Still think you are having a Bad Day????
What about this?????
Betty came home to find Jerry in the kitchen shaking frantically,
almost in a dancing frenzy, with some kind of wire running from
his waist towards the electric kettle.
Intending to jolt him away from the deadly current, she whacked
him with a handy plank of wood, breaking his arm in two places.
Up to that moment, he had been happily listening to his iPod.
the same bed, on Sunday morning, at about 11:00 am,
regardless of their medical condition. This puzzled the
doctors and some even thought it had something to do with
the super natural..
No one could solve the mystery as to why the deaths
occurred around 11:00 am Sunday, so a worldwide team of
experts was assembled to investigate the cause of the
incidents.
The next Sunday morning, a few minutes before 11:00 am
all of the doctors and nurses nervously waited outside the
ward to see for themselves what the terrible phenomenon
was all about.
Some were holding wooden crosses, prayer books, and
other holy objects to ward off the evil spirits.
Just when the clock struck 11:00, Kenneth Roberts, the
part-time Sunday cleaner, entered the ward and unplugged
the life support system so he could use the vacuum cleaner.

The Clan Gathering
All the members of JSAS should feel very proud.
At the Clan Gathering held in Edinburgh last month there was
our very patriotic Past Chieftain, Gordon Benton, marching
along, proudly bearing the newly designed JSAS Saltire with his
wife Trisha at his side.
On behalf of all of us, Gordon, for taking the time and making
the effort, our sincere thanks.

Des Murray Many old time expat residents, like me, were saddened to learn of the death of Des Murray last month, after a long and valiant fight against a rare blood disorder Des, a good friend of mine, was a staunch member of the St. Patrick Society. A real Celt too, who enjoyed good company, a good “jar” and a good laugh at life. I know I write, not only for myself, but also for all of you who knew Des when I extend sincere condolences to his wife Nancy and daughter Olivia. He will be sorely missed.

A Happy Family Day
My good friends Billy and Isobel Hunter sent me this family
photo taken at the recent wedding of their daughter,
Debbie. Billy, who was Chieftain of JSAS in 1993/4, is seen
here with his wife Isobel, daughter Debbie and son Gordon.
There is an interesting tidbit about the Hunter family. Both
Gordon and Debbie followed in their father’s footsteps and
qualified as CAs. Yet, even with three accountants in the
hoose, Isobel still controlled the purse strings!!
