Black and White – JUNE
2010 Edition

    June Buchanan

Unfortunately I can’t always write about success and happiness in my articles and it is with a feeling of deep sadness that I must tell my readers, who remember
June and her family when they lived in Jakarta, that June and Alistair’s son, James, was killed in a traffic accident on Saturday 5th June. James, who would have
celebrated his 23rd birthday the following week, was a passenger in a Honda Civic driven by a friend, when it was in collision with a Volkswagen on the road between
    Kemnay and Monymusk in Aberdeenshire.
I know I speak for all the many friends the Buchanans had here in Jakarta when I extend our deepest sympathy for this heartbreaking tragedy
that has struck their lives and taken their young son from them.

Our Chieftain, Elaine, has already sent an email of condolence from the Society and received a very sad reply from June.

    Bernie McCready.
Queen’s Birthday Honours List
I could not have been more delighted and happy when Jim Shon told me about Malcolm and Susan’s awards in the Queen’s birthday list. What an
honour to be officially recognized by Her Majesty for their individual contributions to the community! It could not have happened to two more
deserving people.
I realize that Malcolm and Susan have been congratulated on the front cover of the website for their awards, but this is MY page and I wish to add
my own personal congratulations, since both Malcolm and Susan are my good and dear friends, as are their respective spouses, Janie and Rex,
who must also be thrilled and proud with the news.

The Java St. Andrew Society must also feel proud of Susan and Malcolm; both are full members and have contributed a lot of their time and effort
to the goals of the Society. Susan is a former Chieftain and Malcolm was the Chairman of the Highland Gathering – both time consuming jobs, I
can tell you.

The Celt in Malcolm (part Welsh) has made him take his efforts one step further by almost singlehandedly with his wife Janie keeping the St.
David’s Society alive here in Jakarta. Quite an achievement given the small Welsh population living here and then to top it all by organizing every
year a fun filled St. David’s Ball as well. Great stuff!

Susan, well what can I say? No sooner had she finished the very demanding Chieftain’s role in JSAS than she took up the position of Chairlady of
the British Women’s Association. As a matter of fact she may have accepted the BWA job just at the end of her year as Chieftain, I can’t
remember. No matter, Susan is always involved, whether it is JSAS, BWA, HG, you name it and she will volunteer with a smile. Mind you, I wonder
if she’s as good tempered with her husband Rex after he has successfully captained the St. George golf team against the St. Andrew’s team for
the Thomson Cup?

Highland Gathering, May 23, 2010
Unfortunately I was not able to attend this year’s Highland Gathering, but from all the accounts I have heard it was a great success, despite the
hiatus the event has had over the past couple of years. Congratulations to the Chairman and the Committee for all the hard work and effort they
put in to resurrect this most unique and colourful pageant.
My good friend, Dave Carswell, currently working in Kazakhstan, forwarded to me some photos of the arena he had received and I am delighted
to reproduce one taken early morning before the majority of the spectators had arrived. It really shows the arena to maximum effect. I
subsequently discovered that Deputy Chieftain, Shona Benton, was responsible for having the pictures taken from one of Lippo’s Towers. What
an original and imaginative idea! It really is a terrific photo, completely capturing the impressive layout of the arena and, in my humble opinion, it’s
the best photo (and layout) I have seen of the arena down through the years.
